HEY JEWEL, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?

CEO and psychotherapist at Black Executive Men. Through Psychotherapy and medication management we help black men in Corporate America find inner peace.

DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?

Yes.

WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?

Being a business owner there are constant stressors and challenges and things to think through that most people are not aware of. They just see my business and think I just see clients, but that's only part of what I do. there's an intense amount of networking, market research, and lead generation happening behind the scenes in order to keep my pipeline flowing with new clients. While I typically enjoy these activities, they can bring on stress at times. The other aspect is dealing with the clients and they're issues. Sometimes they can be overwhelming for me as a clinician.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN TAKING ON DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES?

N/A

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?

I go for walks, I work out regularly, I spend time with loved ones, I get some sun, I eat healthy, I go to see my own therapist.

HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?

The more present and effective and seeing my clients. That's probably the best benefit.

WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?

I ate healthy foods at work, I go for walks and get out in the sun and between clients. I do some of the similar things I mentioned above for self-care when I'm at home.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?

I would tell them to see a therapist as needed. I think everybody should have a therapist even if they're not seeing them, just to have them on hand in case they do you need to see someone. In addition, cultivate meaningful relationships, eat healthy foods, get enough sleep. But because I'm a psychotherapist one of the most important things for some people, not all, but some is to find a job or profession that's fulfilling. if that's important for the young person, I highly suggest that they achieve that goal as quickly as possible in order to find satisfaction within regarding their professional life.
