HEY MELANIE, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?

I am the co-owner of a small mobile business (Hysterics LLC) that provides a unique, safe, and alternative way of releasing stress and is coming up on its' third year of operation. I am also a Registered Nurse of 18 years, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Trauma, and full-time graduate student with an expected graduation date in May of 2020 with my Masters of Nursing in Education.

DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?

As a veteran ER Nurse of 18 yrs and a business owner of a business built upon the idea of a creative outlet for releasing stress, I really have no choice but to acknowledge the need for healthy existence and mental health awareness in all aspects of life. I have seen time and time again how the inability to acknowledge one's own mental health can lead to physical and emotional decline, it can ruin relationships and interrupt life's positive progression. Mental health is just as, if not more, important as physical health. It's only in acknowledging the importance that we can actively spend some time working on it.

WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?

I guess the better question would be, "Are there periods of this journey that are not challenging?" Then I could simply be honest and answer "HECK NO, it's ALL CHALLENGING!!".....I have learned thus far in this journey of wearing many hats is that there are always challenges, some are expected while others are totally unexpected, either way, there are times when I have no clear direction or resolution for handling them. However, what I find is that those challenges only feel as bad as my reaction to them. I believe in the power of meditation, mainly because feelings of being overwhelmed can sometimes be just as if not more stifling than the problem itself. I try to start each day with time to meditate. It allows me to slow my brain down a bit and come back to my center, I find that when I feel calm and less overwhelmed I tend to do better with finding solutions to the expected and unexpected challenges.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN TAKING ON DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES?

I could sit here lie and say I have always considered my mental health, but that would, in fact, just be a lie. The truth is sometimes we don't acknowledge that we have not spent the time we need and deserve on ourselves until we start to see and feel a decline in the very things we fight daily to keep together. These last couple of years have been hard for me and truthfully it wasn't until I found myself crying in the Hysterics trailer, yep the very trailer I built for others to cry in, that I realized, "ok Mel, it's time for you to spend some time on yourself!" How ironic is that for some slap in the face realization!

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?

As a business owner, it is imperative that I spend time with my business. I can't expect for there to be fruits of my labor if there is, of course, no labor. However, It is equally important that I spend time with myself and the people I love. My calendar is my lifeline, I schedule personal time just as I schedule business and I try my best not to waver from my schedule. Being excessively busy has taught me the power of saying both yes and no, and I use both terms appropriately as it concerns the maintenance of my mental health!

HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?

This question is two-fold, as a Nurse I have a responsibility to the safety and well-being of my patients. This means they deserve the best me I can give. As a business owner that specializes in the ability to build teams and act as an outlet for the release of stress, It is my responsibility to be able to better assess the needs of my clients and make this experience meaningful. As I can personally attest to the need for a mentally healthy existence, it is important to me that Hysterics provides a customized experience, one that patrons find rewarding, I believe ultimately that process starts with me and my ability to acknowledge the importance of mental health and the need for innovative outlets to release stress.

WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?

Workdays consist of the checklist! If I can get through 75% of my checklist, It has been a good and productive day. I usually start my workdays with 15 minutes of meditation, clear my head, and get to my checklist! Although my checklist is important I can honestly say if I don't have my 15 minutes of meditation time my day seems a lot more difficult. Also, I love nature, if II find myself becoming overwhelmed I go outside get some sun and some fresh air, take some cleansing breaths, get back to center, and back to work.

My personal time at home is usually spent with the people I love doing the things I love. Hanging out with my son and just talking about nothing, riding bikes, or taking a stroll through the neighborhood. I enjoy playing in the dirt and grooming my flower beds, hanging out with friends, working out, and traveling. I'm a sucker for a family barbeque and literally will plan a "anything event" if it means my family has to pile up in one space.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?

A wise man named Chad tells me often, "Nothing works without you. This plan is centered around you!" You can have the best business idea and your business plan could be solid as a rock, however, you can't execute anything if you are physically or mentally unable. Take care of yourself, YOU have big plans for YOU!!
