HEY MONTIGUS, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. I have my own private practice and have been in the field of mental health, substance abuse, and human services for over 15 years.
DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?
I am always thinking about my mental health due to me working with clients working on their mental health. I have to be mentally fit at all times.
WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?
Along with running my private practice I complete Comprehensive Behavioral Health Assessments for children going into the foster care system. What I read and see from time to time can pull on your heart strings, so I would say that is my biggest challenge.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN TAKING ON DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES?
I have always been considerate of my mental well-being. It is very important to be at my best to give my clients the best of me at all times.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?
I take time out each day to mediate along with working out 3-5 times a week. I know that being mentally and physically fit is very important. They go hand in hand. My belief is that "Self-Care is Non-Negotiable!"
HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?
It allows me to keep my focus on the clients I serve. I know that if I take care of myself I can focus on their issues and not allow mine to get in the way.
WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?
Eustress for me is figuring out how to expand my private practice. Also figuring out ways to create advocate for the Mental Wellness.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?
To be patient with the process. Find people that you can learn from. Be intentional about what you want and go for it. Do be afraid to ask questions.
