HEY JAMESON, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?
I have been a mental health practitioner for over 10 years in various roles. I'm a Doctor of Marriage & Family Therapy and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I currently work for my local school district as a Family Therapist. My and I also own and operate a private practice called Mercier Wellness & Consulting.
DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?
I think about my mental health all the time. I realized early on that I have to preserve my mental well being if I am to help my clients. I have seen too many therapists burnout due to ignoring their mental health.
WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?
In my job, I work with a lot of kids and families who have experienced many difficulties. Sometimes you are limited in what you can do for these families.
As a father and family man, I sometimes find myself worrying about these families. This worry does not paralyze me, but it can occupy my time if I let it. .
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN TAKING ON DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES?
When I was in undergrad, I had a situation where I spent a few days in the hospital. The doctors thought I had cancer, but it turns out I was having some physical symptoms of being stressed out. College life will do that to you. After that experience, I vowed to pay more attention to myself and what my needs are.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?
I make it a habit to have regular time alone. I enjoy being outside so I take my dog on walks, bike ride or go fishing. When I'm not able to be outside, I enjoy reading, maintaining my aquarium, or binging on western movies...(don't judge me).
HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?
Being mentally healthy makes it possible for me to do my job and be effective. It keeps me present rather than worrying about future or stressing about the past.
WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?
At work, Eustress means that I know the difference between what is important and what is urgent. I focus on the tasks that I am able to complete and leave the rest for tomorrow.
At home and in my personal life, I've adopted the practice of minimalism. This has enabled me to devote as much attention as possible to my family and the things I enjoy
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?
You have to figure out a way to make this profession work you. This begins by establishing healthy goals and boundaries. Self care means being selfish and sometimes thats ok.
