The WHYL is a lifestyle that encourages YOU to live freely without any regrets, and if you ever get the chance to link with Kene, you will definitely understand this motto. Although we were only in undergrad together for a year, our friendship did not stop there and I am happy to continue exchange knowledge and ideas as he continues to grow and make waves in this world.
HEY KENE, WHY EUSTRESSIN’?
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING/ HOW LONG?
I am currently a real estate consultant/entrepreneur. I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2012 when I co-founded a lifestyle/apparel brand, the WHYL. I became interested in real estate in 2014 and jumped directly into the field in 2016. I’m committed to spreading the word about the benefits of homeownership as well as the opportunity to utilize real estate to build wealth. I’m also committed to lifting up the next generation. I love inspiring others to pursue their dreams with strategy and conviction.
DO YOU EVER THINK ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IN YOUR PROFESSION?
As an entrepreneur, I tend to often self-impose pressures on myself which can at times lead to the development of stress and affect my mental health. I make it a point to stay grounded and level-headed to avoid letting stress take over. When I’m on the job, many of the clients I work with are in the process of buying their first home which can be quite a stressful undertaking (as it’s usually the largest purchase of their lifetime). I take it upon myself to educate, inform, and equip clients with all the information necessary to help them feel confident and comfortable with their decision to purchase their first home.
WHAT UNIQUE CHALLENGES DO YOU ENCOUNTER SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR JOB THAT HAS AN IMPACT ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT?
A unique challenge I face as an entrepreneur that impact my mental health would have to be uncertainty. Entrepreneurship, in general, is a high-risk field. Every idea requires action and every action is a commitment. The tricky part is that nothing is guaranteed, regardless of the idea or action. Entrepreneurship requires a high degree of self-confidence and self-awareness. Stepping out on a limb to venture into the unknown/uncertainty of an entrepreneurial venture can be scary and stressful. Trying to maintain the confidence and certainty it takes to be successful is quite the challenge, but it comes with the territory.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH WHEN TAKING ON DAY-TO-DAY ACTIVITIES?
I began to consider my mental health regularly, once I realized that my experiences at work played a significant role in how I feel daily. I’ve been in situations in which my work life balance was pretty nonexistent. As well as situations where I didn’t feel like my work was a great fit. In both situations, I noticed how work could affect my mental health. In order to combat that I would make an effort to be very vocal about my situations/feelings. I’d talk with co-workers, friends/family, and mentors. It was important to me to have some kind of release.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THOSE STRESSORS ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?
I am able to manage these stressors primarily in two ways. The first way is by constantly keeping a positive outlook on life. I have always been a relatively optimistic individual. By staying positive and always looking at things from a “glass half full” perspective, I’ve been able to limit the effect of stressors. In addition, I make it a point to stay spiritually grounded. Being grounded in my faith and always understanding that there is something bigger at work, reminds me that I cannot control everything. I focus on those things I can control, and I leave everything else up to the universe to decide. By understanding that I’m not in full control, I am able to always be satisfied as long as I put forth my best effort.
HOW DOES BEING MENTALLY HEALTHY HELP IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK OR ON THE JOB?
Being mentally healthy helps in my field of work because it allows me to perform to the best of my ability, which often is reflected in the quality of service I can provide to clients.
WHAT DOES EUSTRESS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? AT HOME/AWAY FROM WORK?
Eustress for me, at work often can be the same when I’m “off” work. As an entrepreneur sometimes the lines are blurred a little bit between when I am “on/off the clock”. Primarily because I always find myself brainstorming and generating new ideas daily. I have tons of ideas and I write them all down. Some of them are awful, some of them are good. But just the practice of coming up with new ideas is Eustress for me. I’m always excited when I have a new idea, especially when it’s one that leads to a passion of mine.
Another form of Eustress that I wouldn’t want to leave out is spending time in the gym. I’m a firm believer in look good, feel good, perform good. I believe that dedicating time to my personal health has allowed me to become the best version of myself in every sense, and that’s my definition of eustress. In addition, the majority of the world’s brightest minds (in every industry) preach that being physically fit has a direct correlation to energy levels and success levels.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD TELL SOMEONE JUST STARTING IN YOUR PROFESSION OR A YOUNG PERSON WHO ASPIRES TO BE THE PROFESSIONAL THAT YOU ARE?
I’d tell anyone starting out to be grounded in your convictions and have strong beliefs in yourself and the value you/ or your product can provide. Most importantly, I’d tell them to continue to learn and to place an emphasis on personal development. One of my favorite quotes reads as the following:
“Your level of success will seldom exceed your level of personal development. Because success is something you attract by the person you become" – Jim Rohn
I’d recommend that any entrepreneur takes heed to this quote as they pursue their dreams. It’ll allow them to keep in mind what’s most important, their own personal growth and development, and they’ll see first-hand how that has a direct impact on their endeavors.
